The word is pairidaeza, or “walled enclosure,” from the roots pairi, “around,” and daeza, “wall.” It became part of the Hebrew and other Aramaic scriptures as paradeisos and was later adapted to Greek which later became paradise.

In the Bible In the Bible, the Garden of Eden is paradise. It was a beautiful location where the first couple lived, unaffected of illness and death. When they rebelled against God and sinned they lost their paradise. In later Bible prophecies, paradise is portrayed as a place in the eschatological future where the happy people of the world can live forever. The term “paradise” could also be a reference to a state of spiritual or psychological happiness and joy.

A place to Play

Totopia is a brand new addition to the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County in Santa Rosa’s west campus. It opened this week.
